Bulldogs News · Wrestling Dawgs Take part in 2 Tournaments

On Friday and Saturday, we traveled to Smiths Station to take part in the Smiths Invitational Tournament. That  tournament consisted of all wrestlers in their respective weight classes battling through a bracket for individual medals and team glory. 15 Wrestling Dawgs participated in this tough tournament featuring 23 good teams from Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
When all was said and done, The Bulldogs put two grapplers on the podium: Heavyweight James Dawson vanquished all in his bracket and was crowned Smiths Invitational Champion. 195# grappler Ben Daughtry placed 4th with a 4-2 record but there is an asterisk attached: Coach Davis pulled him out of his last match as a medical precaution which gave Ben’s opponent the 3rd place medal. Ben also won the “Fastest Pin Award” with a 9-second pin.
Several of our young Dawgs were 2-2, and although they did not make it to the medal stand, their efforts and determination still helped the team. We finished 10th of 23, but I want to add an addendum: of the top 10 teams, 8 were from either Georgia or Florida therefore we were the 2nd highest placing Alabama team. Go Dawgs!!
As if the weekend wasn’t tough enough, the Opelika Wrestling Bulldogs hosted 15 teams from all over Alabama and 1 from Columbus, Georgia yesterday on MLK Day. This team dual tournament pitted team vs team. There were 4 pools of 4 teams vying for the coveted title of Bulldawg Brawl Champion.  After the teams wrestled in their pools, they were placed in a brackets to battle for the title.
The Wrestling Dawgs were in a pool with 6A ranked #10 Fort Payne Wildcats, the Dothan Wolves and the Columbus Blue Devils. In the first match, Ft. Payne took advantage of the Bulldogs youth and inexperience and handed us a loss. Our next opponent in pool play was the Columbus Blue Devils who gave us a loss as well. Final pool action saw us face the Dothan Wolves. We pulled out a 48-24 victory against the Wolves. Pool play ended which left us the 3rd seed. In bracket matches, we vanquished the Wetumpka Indians which gave us a 9th place finish and 2-2 record in the Bulldawg Brawl.

Thursday we travel to Russell County to battle the Russell County Warriors, Shaw Raiders and Hardaway Hawks. Saturday we will participate in Hornet Slam 6 at Beauregard High School. Wish our Wrestling Dawgs good luck.
