Bulldogs News · Dawson/Daughtry Duo Dominate Downtime

Christmas break began for the Opelika High School Wrestling Bulldogs on December 20 and ended today but several Wrestling Dawgs used the downtime to get in some mat time; most notably Heavyweight James “Hambone” Dawson and 195# Ben “Big Bird” Daughtry.

As soon as Christmas break began , 7 Wrestling Dawgs loaded the bus and went to Pelham, Alabama for the Pelham Invitational. Dawson posted a 6-0 record that weekend to win the heavyweight division. Daughtry was 5-1 after going down in the finals on a controversial call therefore Ben settled for 2nd place.

Last weekend, 3 Wrestling Dawgs rolled into Wetumpka for the Indians Invitational. For the 2nd weekend of their break, Dawson and Daughtry handled the competition well. James went 6-0 once again and was crowned Heavyweight Champion. To add to his accolades, James was voted the John Hayden Countryman Most Outstanding Wrestler and was selected as the winner of the Best Match Award to cap off an already outstanding weekend. Ben hammered out a 5-0 record at the Indians Invitational and was crowned the 195# Champion.
We had 4  Freshman Dawgs participate in the Indians JV Invitational that ran concurrently with the Varsity. Freshman Logan Sheridan reeled off a 4-1 record for a 5th place finish while Freshman Landon Willis posted a 3-1 record and a 5th place finish.

To close out their Christmas break this weekend, 8 Wrestling Dawgs took part in the Julian McPhillips Invitational at St. James School in Montgomery. Once again the brightest stars were James and Ben. Both Senior Captains finished today with 4-0 records and championships in their respective weight classes. James was honored with the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for a 2nd straight weekend.

Although the others Dawgs wrestled hard, they fell just short of placing. Head Coach Jim Davis was extremely proud of the efforts of all the Wrestling Dawgs who put in work over the break.

School resumes Monday and so does the 2nd half of wrestling season. The Dawgs will be in action as a team again Thursday night (1.9.20) as we travel to Stanhope Elmore to battle the Mustangs and Jeff Davis Volunteers. Hope to see you rabid Dawgs fans there. Wrestling is slated to start at 5:30 pm at Stanhope Elmore High School in Millbrook.

Go Dawgs!!!!
