Tonight the Wetumpka Tribe came into Opelika with bad intentions in their minds. The Indians wanted to attack the Dawgs in their own Dawghouse and add another L to the Bulldogs resume. Unbeknownst to the Indians, the Bulldogs don’t like being invaded at home and defended their turf with fervor.
The Indians won the opening coin toss and elected to defer their choice until the 2nd half. That was okay with the Bulldogs, but we were a bit off kilter and had an errant pass that the Indians picked off. Ok!
The Dawgs Defense came in and allowed a 3-play, 3 yard drive that saw us intercept the ball right back.
Dawgs offense will take advantage of the turnover and drive 45 yards in five plays. The drive is capped off by a Kaden Cooper run into the endzone and a Bulldogs TD. George Meyers attempted the PAT and nailed it down the middle of the uprights. Dawgs lead 7-0.
On the ensuing Indians drive, the Wetumpka Offense was attacked hard. A pack of rabid Dawgs defenders nailed the Indian running back and forced a fumble recovered by the Dawgs!!
The Opelika offense took advantage of the 2nd Wetumpka turnover; Jamaroun Satterwhite wanted a TD and scored it by running off the left side of the offensive line for 15 yards and the score. George Meyers PAT was not good this time, but the Dawgs still led 13-0.
The next Wetumpka drive ended in a missed field goal that gave the Dawgs the ball at the minus 20. That gave Coach Traylor and the Offense the opportunity to show off the air-raid offense. After several runs and 40 yards gained, Jarrious “Lil J” Goodman threw a 40-yard laser to a semi-open son-of-a-preacher-man, George Meyers for the TD just before the end of the 1st half. Meyers PAT was blocked leaving the Dawgs with a 19-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Indians take the kickoff first. They had 7-play drive that resulted in a punt. Dawgs get it again. This offensive drive saw the Dawgs turn it over to the Indians on a fumble. Unfortunately the turnover took place on the Dawgs 12-yard line giving the Indians a short field that they took advantage of by running left side and poking into the endzone. PAT was good, so the score was now Dawgs 19- Indians 7.
Dawgs next possession was Kaden Cooper run 30 yards off the left side of the offensive line. George Meyers converted the PAT giving the Dawgs a 26-7 lead.
The Indians take the kickoff and on their opening play of the drive, LB Tay McClure knocked the ball from the Indians hand forcing a fumble that Zayne Lackey pounced on for the Bulldogs.
Dawgs would score again on a Satterwhite carry. His 2nd TD of the night was followed by a George Meyers PAT that gave the Dawgs 33-7 lead with about 4 minutes left in the game.
The Indians would take advantage of this possession and move 81 yards in 5 plays. The Indians PAT was blocked by Tay McClure leaving the score Dawgs 33- Indians-13.
The Dawgs set up for an onside kick return and were rewarded as the Indians attempted the onside kick. Tay McClure signaled for a fair catch, hauled in the kick and gave the offense the ball. The Dawgs O wanted to just run out the clock but the Indians called timeout with just over 1 minute to play. Jamaroun Satterwhite scored his 3rd TD of the night by running 55 yards down the right sideline. Meyers PAT was good, Dawgs 40- Indians 13.
The Indians didn’t give up. With 44 seconds remaining, the Indians QB hit an open receiver who streaked 69 yards for the Wetumpka TD. PAT no good. Dawgs lead 40-19. The Indians would attempt another onside kick but Da’Vion Johnson smothered the ball to keep in the Dawgs hands.
The Dawgs took a knee and let the clock expire. Final Dawgs 40- Indians 19.
Our offensive player of the game is Jamaroun Satterwhite. Defensive player of the game is Tay McClure Gay.
The Bulldogs would like to thank all the fans who came out and cheered the Dawgs on!!
Next week the Dawgs are on the road as we travel to Duck-Samford Stadium to take on the rival Auburn Tigers. Kickoff set for 5:00.
See you then and there! GO DAWGS!!!!
