Tonight the Freshman Football Bulldogs closed out the season with a win over the visiting Valley Freshman Rams.
Our Dawgs started on defense tonight and set the tone early, as the Rams took the opening possession but were pushed backwards by the Opelika defense. The Rams lost several yards in their opening stanza and had to punt to the fired up Dawgs. The ensuing drive by the Dawgs was capped off by a 54-yard scamper by Jarell Stinson. Charles “Big Chuck” Gagliano’s PAT was successful which gave the Dawgs a 7-0 lead. Valley’s second possession would end up in a touchdown as the Rams were able to sneak through the Opelika D for a 45-yard TD run. The Rams two-point conversion failed, leaving the Dawgs on top 7-6. The Dawgs took full control at that point scoring 28 unanswered points to go up 35-6 at halftime. Scoring for the Dawgs during the deluge was Jarell Stinson on a 65-yard punt return, Tre Roberts on a 63-yard reception from QB Jackson Bates and Kymi Davis was the workhorse running back for the Dawgs in the 2nd quarter with 74 yards of rushing offense and 2 TD’s.
The second half was under a running clock meaning that it only stopped during an injury, therefore the 2nd half was only 16 very quick minutes of football. The Rams took advantage of the backups that were playing for the Dawgs and were able to find pay dirt on a long run to cap the scoring in the 2nd half. FINAL SCORE: Dawgs 35- Valley 12.
The Freshman season is now complete. After a shaky start, these young DAWGS found it within themselves to finish as they should: by being tough, smart and playing for each other. The Freshman Dawgs end 3-3 on the season. Look for several of these youngsters to be wearing the Red and Black and representing us well for the next 3 years. Go DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!
